Exosomes, growth factors & peptides – what really works for your skin?

The beauty world is full of exciting new terms: exosomes, growth factors, cell communication... It all sounds hyper-innovative, but what is the reality? And what does this mean for your skincare?

In this blog, we will explain step by step what these ingredients are, what role they can play in the skin and, most importantly: which of them have a truly proven effect.

 

What are exosomes?

Exosomes are microscopic vesicles that cells use to send messages to each other. You can think of them as tiny packages of information that aid in repair and communication between cells.

In the medical world, they are being researched for wound healing and tissue repair. But in skincare, the evidence is still very limited. So far, there is no well-established effect that exosomes in a cream or serum actually penetrate deeply enough into the skin to perform the same work there.

In short: interesting in theory, but not yet a proven solution for skin rejuvenation.

 

Growth factors: the directors of cell division

Growth factors are proteins that can stimulate your cells to divide, repair, and create new skin structures. In theory, this would be fantastic for collagen and elastin, and thus for firm skin.

But there are some caveats:

  • Growth factors are large molecules that have difficulty penetrating the skin barrier.
  • The research that does exist is often small and not always convincing.

In short: growth factors sound promising, but there is still insufficient evidence that they truly work in cosmetics.

 

Peptides: small players, big impact

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. They are much smaller than growth factors and can therefore penetrate the skin better. They are also stable enough to be incorporated into cosmetics.

There are different types of peptides, each with its own task:

  • Signal peptides: signal the skin to produce collagen and elastin again.
  • Neurotransmission-inhibiting peptides: help to soften fine lines caused by muscle tension, somewhat comparable to a mild botox in a jar.
  • Transport peptides: transport important minerals such as copper to skin cells, so that they function better.
  • Enzyme-inhibiting peptides: protect against enzymes that break down collagen and hyaluronic acid.
  • Antimicrobial peptides: support the skin's natural defenses and can be useful for acne or inflammation.

What we know about peptides: they have a solid scientific basis. They improve skin structure, hydration, and firmness, and have been successfully used in cosmetics for years.

 

Hype versus evidence

  • Exosomes and growth factors: sound innovative, but there is still too little evidence of efficacy in cosmetics.
  • Peptides: extensively researched, proven effective and reliable.

 

What does this mean for you as a consumer?

It's tempting to follow trends that promise a lot but haven't yet been proven. With peptides, you can be sure that you are choosing ingredients that truly work and make the skin stronger, firmer, and healthier.

Exosomes and growth factors? We'll keep an eye on them for now – who knows what the future holds. But today, peptides are the reliable choice.
